Volunteers perform a wide range of jobs that includes serving as Day Manager overseeing the operation of the store; working the cash register; training new volunteers; sorting, pricing and shelving donated books; giving new customers a tour of the store, highlighting the organization of fiction and non-fiction, pricing, and special sales; making gift items, such as turned wooden jewelry and vases that, when sold, provides income to the store; contributing books to neighborhood libraries and other non-profits; preparing for major sales, such as Books-by-the-Bag (BBB) and Friends Half-Price sales; donating books to special children's events, such as the State Fair Kids Day Parade; conceiving of and developing projects, such as the Annex, that enhance the processing, display, and sale of books; and so forth. A volunteer may also adopt a particular non-fiction subject area, such as architecture, science, or memoirs, and assume responsibility for decisions about what to keep, what to discard, and what to put on sale, while keeping the shelves in the store neat and tidy. Or, another volunteer could do the same in fiction by managing all books written by authors whose last name starts with a particular letter, such as “C” or “W”. One person may perform several different roles during the course of a workday or over a period of time. The current group of volunteers comes from a wide range of occupational backgrounds and life experiences. There are five former health-care workers, including four nurses and a speech-language pathologist; included also are a dietitian who worked at CMHIP, a minister, several public-school teachers and university faculty, a university librarian, a resource manager with the City of Pueblo, an engineer with the City of Chicago, a bank teller, a computer geek, and two published authors (who are still writing). There are also four vets, each from a different branch of the military. A few volunteers still work, either for an employer or running their own businesses; one owns and operates a house and pet sitting business. And finally, leisure-time activities pursued by the current volunteers include running, woodturning, photography, and, of course, reading. Chartered in 1960, FOL continues to support the growth of the Pueblo City-County Library District and its energetic programs. FOL operates a used book store \"Books Again\", which opened in 2005, to fund library programs, including the award-winning summer reading program, reading and writing contests and a bookmark design contest, as well as other unique and popular library projects. The Friends of the Library annual meeting is held each April to elect board members for the coming year, to present the projected annual budget, and to give an annual report of services and activities. In addition, there is a dinner and special entertainment. Funds raised through membership fees and sales at the Books Again Used Bookstore are used for many extra special projects at the library and its branches. Library employees may submit requests for funding special projects by filling out the Request for Funding Proposal form, available at the Books Again, and returning it there. The club now meets on the third Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. at the store. The books are both fiction and nonfiction covering a variety of topics. Political, religious, romance, and books in a series will not be considered. Typical length is between 300‑400 pages. Members are required to find their own books. Many are available through the [Pueblo City-County Library‑District.](https://www.pueblolibrary.org/) The book list has a link to discussion questions. Members are asked to read the book and answer the questions prior to the meeting. The meeting will consist of an author presentation, discussion of questions and overview of the following month's book. The book club has been limited to 10 members. Every donated book is carefully inspected for its condition before being considered for book art. If a book is too worn for sale, we explore its potential as a piece of book art rather than discarding it. Books can be damaged by dirt, dust, sunlight, and moisture, leading to yellowed, brittle pages, tears, stains, missing or scribbled pages, and torn covers that may render them unusable. However, instead of discarding these tattered volumes, Books Again reconsiders them for various book art projects, such as Altered Books, Glue Books, or Junk Journals. As book art, these items, which might otherwise face destruction, are rescued by the book artist. Thus, whether as reading material or a keepsake filled with memories, Books Again is committed to putting a book in every reader’s hands. ## About Books Again Books Again is a project of the [Friends of the Library.](https://booksagainbookstore.com/friends) The proceeds from the sale of used books benefit the [Pueblo City-County Library District,](https://www.pueblolibrary.org/) helping to fund a variety of activities and physical improvements.
